My Christmas holidays started this weekend and I’m at a family get-together right now. I arrived at my sister’s house just after their barbecue had started (she’s fortunate enough to live in a place that has good weather year-round), and after welcoming me in my sister mentioned that her daughters Jenny (12) and Haley (11) (not their real names) brought their boyfriends. When I heard Jenny’s voice I was expecting to see her awkwardly holding hands with some shy 12-year-old boy, but instead she was on the arm of a tall teenager. I didn’t know what to make of this but I shook his hand and made some small talk, I asked if he was still in school and he said he’s in his senior year in high school, and when I asked how long he’d been dating Jenny he said it’s been 6 months. Jenny called him over to introduce him to some more guests, and later I saw her sitting on his lap playing on her phone while he talked to another boy sitting next to him. I saw them kissing too and it looked like they were using tongue, it was right in front of her family but nobody seemed to mind. Later I got to talking about sports to the other teenage boy as I was flipping burgers, he was the one that Jenny’s boyfriend had been talking to and they looked about the same age. When I asked how he knows the family he said he’s Haley’s boyfriend. Later I talked to my sister about that and she said it’s fairly normal these days for girls to start dating at that age and for the boys to be a few years older, she said she knows them and they’re nice boys who she trusts around them. She also added “don’t worry, I have them both on birth control”, and I was surprised by how casually she mentioned that. Honestly I’m surprised that Haley even needs birth control, she doesn’t look like she’s hit puberty at all yet. Is it really becoming common these days for preteen girls to have boyfriends 5+ years older than them?
